We may have had another example of how rumors spread, today, in our story about the burden of gas prices on the city budget.  The story came to us with the suggestion that a target has been set for a surcharge on take-home city vehicles.   From what we were told, it’s too early to know what such a fee might be — if it comes to that.

Councillor Ben Hunter says his study committee has met once, already, and will meet again next month.  “We’re gonna move to action, I’m confident of that,” he said.  Exactly what that action will be isn’t clear.  He also can’t say when it would take effect, if any policy changes are approved.

F.O.P. President Bill Owensby says he joins IMPD Chief Mike Spears in encouraging officers to treat their squad cars as if they’re their own cars.  As part of that goal, Owensby says he and the Chief support conservation measures to reduce fuel use — and Owensby says it’s too early to know whether those measures are making a difference.
