Conventional Wisdom
Pundits may have trouble assessing the “bounce” from the Democratic Convention that started today. CBS pollster Kathy Frankovic says there’s “definitely the possibility for movement in the next few weeks.”
But, she says the focus will shift so quickly from the Democrats to the Republicans “that whatever opinions might be expressed over Labor Day weekend probably won’t last too long.”
Frankovic also says the compressed convention schedule may dilute the impact of John McCain’s vice-presidential choice because that news may “get mixed in with everything else going on.”
Bob Schieffer of CBS predicts the conventions — and the debates — will be the deciding factors in this year’s election. But, party performance in the conventions can be a huge influence on voters. “The party that has the best convention,” Schieffer says, “the party that looks the most unified during its convention is, generally speaking, the party that usually wins the presidency.”
