Introducing IntenseDebate for Comments

March 31st, 2009 at 9:23 pm by Jason Crundwell under Inside WISHTV.com

Over the past year we’ve used Topix.net to power our comment system.  While Topix provided us an easy to use platform, it did have some drawbacks.  As our regular comment users know, we have a few bad apples that posted inappropriate comments very frequently.  We also didn’t want our users to have to leave the site to post comments or read user comments.

intensedebate_logo-smallwebSo after a long search we have decided to make the switch to IntenseDebate.  IntenseDebate is a commenting system that supports WordPress and several other blogs.  It also has many features that makes it easier to admin.

The million dollar question is… Do I have to register?

For now, the answer is no.  But we encourage users to register and log in when posting comments.  If you have a WordPress.com account, OpenID or IntenseDebate account, use can use that profile to comment on WISHTV.com.  That way you can include your avatar.  To register check the register button the first time you post a comment.

We’ll be adding IntenseDebate to our blog commenting system in the near future as well.  In the mean time, please let us know what you think.

Interesting idea. I hope it works.

Well, I’ve given you the benefit of the doubt for a few days.
Let me be one of the many who will tell you that the entire wish site is convoluted and slow loading, to the point that many will be discouraged to post.
Don’t EVEN try to misplace blame onto our computers’ processing speeds, or broadband speeds. The equipment & speeds that I use both at home & work scream.
There are so many popups & garbage ads attempting to open in separate windows, that navigating the wish site turns into complete frustration.
So I’ll defer to the stay-at-homes, who have the luxury of unlimited leisure time, and also seem to be the ones who get offended at the most at blatant truths when thrust in their face. These seem to be the only people that you want to use the site, anyway.
I know there are some who cannot resist very, very racist and inflammatory remarks, BOTH white & black included. But most of us at least tried to seriously debate, even at times with some grownup sarcasm & humor tossed in for fun.
But now you’ll have the pleasure of those who are used to dial-up speeds, being the sole milquetoast “debaters” (ha) on your “new & improved forum”.
    Adios.
Now, aren’t you relieved to have rid yourself of one of those uppity posters?

Bad idea. This is providing some unscrupulous people to vomit their viles to the innocent readers. Just take for example the stupid who wrote dissing the entire human race, black race. I am white but I strongly object to what that moron said about the entire black people.
At least if people register, they will have the notion that they could be traced if it comes to it, because they really could be traced down when it does come to it.

I for one think this is a good idea. I have never had any problems getting your site to load or post my comments. I do have dsl hookup so maybe thats the reason my posts are loaded with ease. So I dont know what “sownoats” is talking about… I like the look of the new comment area. It makes it easier to see the comments and to scroll through the ones that YOU KNOW will have the untasteful remarks. My question is, is there a way to weed those people out with this new program? or do we still have to endure their (to put it nicely) hateful, brainless and nasty comments?

Thank you for taking a step up and providing us with a better arena for our comments and debates!

  5. Mary says:

Agree with everything sownoats said. I really don’t know why I keep coming to wishtv.com anymore. It’s horrible. Comments? And this seems to be the only place to leave any comments. I don’t see anywhere to leave a comment with this new commenting system for any of the stories. It all links to here.

  6. varesidentinindy says:

if i don’t have to be registered why did i have to leave an email address just to comment?

  7. Jason Crundwell says:

@ Mary: The comments system is pulled into our story page through a javascript tag. Make sure your javascript controls are turned on in your browser settings.

@varesideninidny: The email form is just part of the Intense Debate setup. It’s there so we can respond privately to a concern if needed. For example, I tried to contact “Mary” about her specific problem at the email she provided, but it can back as a bad address.

You have gone from a format that allowed comments by many people to one that inhibits comments. In the last couple of days I have clicked on a topic and have yet to find a comment on any of them because I look forward to the pithy comments by the regulars. Way to go WISH! Looks like some computer geek convinced his bosses to try something new and it has backfired and participation is down! Unless that is what you wanted in the first place!

More let’s censor the sensible, 1st amendment quashing, cater to the liberal and don’t offend the on-the-dole with the truth media crap. BTW- I am a self-supported, non-white that is actually capable of thinking for himself(I don’t need the herd mentality). Sorry to disappoint you reverse-racists out there. Who needs WISHtv8 anyway?

  10. Starlett Miller says:

I just posted some pretty mild comments and they were deleted.

You must have plenty of time to review ALL the comments now that you only get twenty or thirty a day… TOTAL.

You can’t tell me you have only had eight comments on your “Introducing IntenseDebate for Comments” either.

  11. rita curry says:

I was also deleted. maybe it was because high school grads was being mention, or maybe it’s because high school grads are working for the welfare system and not having PERF benifits or maybe because I rhymed Mitch with a rhyming word but I didn’ say the actual word but the rhyming word And the thing is I wasn’t even through typying. Big brother is everywhere!
