New commenting tools / User registration

January 28th, 2010 at 2:33 pm by Jason Crundwell under Inside WISHTV.com

This week, we have begun the process to migrate our story commenting modules to a new system.  For the past nine months or so, we’ve been using IntenseDebate to power our story comments.  This system has worked well, but the biggest issue has been inappropriate comments left by a small percentage of users.  Our content team has spent a lot of time reading and deleting inappropriate comments each day; time that could have been spent writing more stories.

Our new comments system will require you to create an account before you can comment.  Your account is also tied into our Partici8te section, you can use it to upload photos, videos or start your own blog.  Our goal is to merge other areas of our site into this one site-wide login.  It will take us some time to get it all integrated, but that’s our goal.

Now we know the new system isn’t going to get rid of all the inappropriate comments, but it sure will help.  Our new system has better tools to allow us to suspend or block individual users.  Users will still have to report inappropriate material to be reviewed by a moderator.

Our goal is a better user experience for all our visitors to WISHTV.com.

  2. chesa319 says:

I am so glad that you are doing this.

  3. Trinity Moffett says:

    THANK YOU!!!!!

Everytime I get on this site to read the news and the comments left, most of the people on here are just bashing races and such. The way I see it, we are all adults (or supposed to be…) and people should be civil to one another, even if they don’t agree with something.

Thanks for taking the time to make your website better!!!

    Have a great day!!!!

  4. Starlett Miller says:

You get very few comments as it is, now you will get even less. If it is your “content team” that writes these stories, you all need English and journalism classes.

You as “journalists” in America should not be so afraid of what your readers have to say.

What a bunch of generation X weenies

  5. IndyG says:

you comment section will decline as will the people that bother reading some stories. it’s your pool though.

  6. hope says:

I am glad for the new system I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not at the exspence of hurting others

  7. Kevin says:

This is a good thing. It will eliminate the nasty comments and the bashing of others. I do think you should invest some money into a real copy editor or proof reader. Your mistakes are a reflection of your station. The more mistakes, the more “shoddy” the reporting.

  8. dave says:

I agree with Starlett. Your writers need English and journalism classes. And whatever happened to free speech? Oh, I forgot you’re a right leaning establishment and you want free speech as long as it agrees with your ideology. Reminds me of the Bush era, thank God that is over, where you want information and news, but only if it agrees with your goals and interests. An open discussion on the issues is just that, OPEN.

  9. Aurora says:

Personally, I wish ALL comment sections on all news sites were removed altogether. I go to these sites to read news for myself and I do not appreciate most of the mean comments I see, most of the time by accident.

  10. Ronald says:

Ok ! So we lose more rights to say what we think .I dont always agree with what you say about things .

  11. Doris says:

I am glad to see this change. I like to read comments on some of the stories but I get very tired of all the bashing, uncalled for and hurtful comments that have nothing to do with the story. I see it has already started with your explanation of why you are changing this section. Thanks for the change

  12. Bubba says:

Yes, why even have a comments section? Even the comments that aren’t inappropriate are either ignorant or banal. Very little in the way of thoughtful discourse actually occurs on the Internet.

  13. IndyG says:

Unless you plan to ban yahoo and other email accounts you are not going to get any better information from users. People do not use their real names for trash email accounts, so you gain very little from this except perhaps fewer people reading your stories and posts.

  14. IndyG says:

Aurora, then dont read them … simple solution .. sheesh

  15. Indywest says:

Everyone has the right to read the comments, everyone has the right to freedom of speech, everyone has the right to being treated fairly. But who wants to come here and read comments of nothing but namecalling and insult? Can you just share your opinion politely and leave it at that? It would still be freedom of speech.

  16. charles stone says:

granted this sounds good but the voice of the people must be heard let us deside how to deal with them please don’t take that away from us.

  17. Lost in Indiana says:

I am glad that there will be a registration required. The main comments that I see being stopped are those that are racist AND left by those that are cowards and list themselves as guest refusing to identify themselves. These are the real problem. You can still leave all the comments you want and freely give your opinion, you just have to own up to them as well. Job well done WISH TV.

  18. tim prather says:

the one thing you should do is to delete every message that crys about some ones spelling!! we all have hit the wrong keys at times when we are typing why make a fuss over it? and some people just dont know the right words to say but we all know what they mean. these people that picks apart every message that has bad spelling should be band. your new rules are fine with all of us people who are nice people—-so thank you for the changes–NOW ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS ENFORCE THE RULES AND BAND SOME OF THESE KNOW IT ALLS!!!!!

  19. NavyDad says:

Great idea. People need to be accountable for their comments. Way too much hate speech on the more “open” boards.

  20. IndianaGuest says:

Lost in Indiana says: left by those that are cowards and list themselves as guest refusing to identify themselves.

Wow, I bet you get a lot of funny looks with a name like Lost in Indiana on your drivers license! You shouldn’t talk about cowards hiding behind Anon user names if you’re not willing to display your own true name.

  21. Turk549 says:

Comments should be limited to the contents of the item being commented on and not the other commenters. No one really gives a rats ass how others feel about the topic… they only want a platform to voice their own opinion.

  22. Chris says:

There should be a study done on why anonymous blog form comment sections bring out the worst in some people. This registration should help deter those unregistered users from drive by comments. But you are still going to have so many comments that will do absolutely nothing for discourse or progression of the story. Overall I believe a link to a discussion forum after each story would be more appropriate than a comment section. The page of a story should not he home to a vent session where people can lash out with stereotypical comments & generalize a whole community because a specific incident for example. Those people can get together in a forum. People who just want to read the important vitals of a story should not have to even accidentally read that drivel.
