Lugar Releases Poll

November 17th, 2010 at 5:44 pm by under Jim Shella's Political Blog

Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) just released a poll showing Indiana approval ratings for a long list of politicians.  Lugar is at the top with a 66% favorable rating.  Governor Mitch Daniels is at 59%. (That’s a similar finding to the 58% in the WISH TV Indiana Poll.)

Curiously, Lugar included potential primary challengers Richard Mourdock and Mike Delph in the poll.  Mourdock is at 14% and Delph is at 7%.

  1. [...] Lugar remains very popular in Indiana. Of course it's a primary, not a general election, he has to worry [...]

    Who relased this poll?
I would vote him if you paid me.
He is to old and has been a senator long enough.
We need fresh ideas from good liberal candidate not tea party nut jobs or right wing conservatives.

We need a senator who will fight for term limits to end corruption and special intrest from ruining our democracy.

  3. CHS says:

Who are they polling when the top vote getter in 2010 (Mourdock) only has a 14% approval rating. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for Sen. Lugar, but really? Mourdock, by the way, only got about 15,000 less votes than Lugar did in the 2006 General (when there was no Democrat on the ballot).

I sure would like to know some of the details and specifics of that poll, Mr. Shella. There is no mention of it on the Lugar2012 website. We citizens need information and data to draw proper conclusions. Do you know if the poll reached the general population, or voters, or likely voters, or voters who get exercised enough to get out for the primaries? Is there any way you can lay out a more conclusive reading of this aledged poll? Can you get the Lugar campaign to be more forthcoming? Is there any possibility that you and your station might be doing your own polling on this candidate? In as much as the camnpaign did the “curious” thing with regards Delph and Mourdock, do you have any ideas why they did that? Wouldn’t that be more appropriate for an organization like yours to do? Please advise.

    Thank you, Paul Kilpatrick

The poll was conducted prior to the election. 800 likely voters, 3.5% margin of error. I can’t speak to the motivation. We won’t poll until much closer to the election.

CHS: there were more Hoosiers this year, more voters, ergo candidates recieved more.

This hyperbole about “most votes ever” or “14,000 votes away from” most votes ever, ignores a few critical issues:

    1. Murdock is sitll relatively unknown.
    2. If voters are asked, “Are you aware, Mr. Murdock is one of the state officials who took the auto bailout through the federal court system?”, I’m pretty sure some Hoosiers’ opinions would change. Especilaly now, with the Kokomo (mini-?) rebound and the GM stock offering. An industry was saved, and that industry is crucial to Indiana.
    3. In terms of number of eligible voters in ratio to votes cast for a candidate, two names stand above all the others: Dick Lugar and Evan Bayh. Mitch Daniels is right there, too.

No. 3 isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

Just from reviewing ANTSTAR’s posting, it’s pretty clear that we need someone who will focus on education, too, as in teaching people how to submit posts that aren’t illiterate!
