Travel Statuses Explaned
You’re probably familiar with the “Level 1, 2, or 3″ travel advisory/restrictions issued by county emergency management agencies. Depending on the county, those levels could have meant different things.
Now the Indiana Department of Homeland Security has streamlined the county travel status system for the entire state.
- Travel Advisory (Yellow) – Travelers should use caution because of a hazardous situation.
- Travel Watch (Orange) – Only essential travel is recommended (i.e., to and from work, emergency situations etc.)
- Travel Warning (Red) – Travel may be restricted to emergency personnel only. Citizens are directed to refrain from all travel, comply with necessary emergency measures and cooperate with public officers and emergency managers.
You can check on your counties travel status by visiting the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s travel map.

How will we know if we have went to a level red, which is no travel unless it’s a emergency? Will it be on the news?
Henry County is a under a red travel warning, yet businesses are open, employers are expecting employees to come in. It is confusing–do I go ahead to work? Do I risk receipt of an expensive “fine” if I am pulled over while heading to work? I’m not finding this system helpful. Either it is “red” and stay off the road except in an emergency or remain at the “orange” watch level.
