Fishers Announces $20 Million Investment in Drive Fishers Initiative

2012 Road Improvement Projects to Focus on Key Intersections

FISHERS, Ind. (April 10, 2012) — The Town of Fishers announced today a $20 million investment in the 2012 Drive Fishers initiative; an effort that will focus on areas in Fishers that have had a history of high-traffic volume, such as 96th street and Allisonville road, state road 37, and Fall Creek road in Geist.

“In a time when many communities are unable to invest in their infrastructure, Fishers is in an enviable position,” said Fishers Town Council Member Stuart Easley. “We are not only able to invest in making improvements to major intersections, but we are also introducing new technology, which will drive Fishers forward in smart and efficient ways of traveling.”

2012 improvements are already underway at 96th street and Allisonville road, but several other projects are slated for 2012, including:

  • 126th street phase III construction includes widening of 126th street from a two lane to a four lane divided highway and a multi-purpose trail providing access from Billericay Park to Hoosier Road Elementary School.
  • State Road 37 project will add an intersection at 135th street, opening areas for future economic development, improving flow of traffic with added lanes, and giving access to existing Fishers businesses.
  • 131st and Lantern road roundabout construction will improve traffic flow in all directions.
  • Fall Creek road and Brooks School road roundabout will improve traffic access to Geist and a portion of Fall Creek Road will be resurfaced.

The intersection improvements on 96th street and Allisonville road will include a Fishers U-turn, commonly referred to as a median u-turn or Michigan Left along both Allisonville Road and 96thStreet. Drivers going through the Fishers U-turn attempting to make a left turn will instead turn right and then make a U-turn at a median crossover. (Simulation available)

Improvements to the intersection began the first week of April and will end in late November of 2012 with all lanes open to traffic and final landscaping by May 2013. Two through lanes and one left turn lane will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project.
