The change in John Gregg’s campaign strategy, a change first reported here on Wednesday, has resulted in a TV ad that is now on the air. The ad delivers a more serious John Gregg. “I’m John Gregg and we’ve had some fun in this campaign,” he says in the ad, “but I never forget that what happens in the Capitol is serious business.”
It’s an ad that was videotaped just two days ago in the Statehouse as Gregg deflected criticism regarding a series of five ads that were shot in his hometown. “Our plan was always to show me from Sandborn to the Statehouse,” he said then, “just like my book title.”
State Republican chairman Eric Holcomb still criticizes Gregg. “It’s been one kinda head scratcher after another with each commercial,” he says.
But the ads that featured family members, neighbors and small town parallels have defenders. “And those earlier ads are who John Gregg is, he’s not misleading you,” says Democrat Ann DeLaney. “He’s not wrapping himself in sheep’s clothing like Mike Pence has done for the last six months.” But, despite them, Gregg still trails by 13 points in a recent poll. “He just doesn’t have the money necessary at this point to make the difference,” says political analyst John Ketzenberger, “no matter what the ads are.”
Something that hasn’t changed–the ads still have a dose of Gregg’s personality along with a swipe at Republican Mike Pence. “Indiana experience, or Mike Pence who’s been part of the problem in Congress,” says Gregg in the ad. “I hope it’s an easy choice.”
