Pence names new State Police SuperintendentDecember 19th, 2012 at 3:20 pm by Jim Shella under Jim Shella's Political Blog
Indianapolis– (WISH) Governor-elect Mike Pence announced his selection for State Police Superintendent today. Former Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Carter will replace Paul Whitesell, who withdrew his name from consideration.
At the announcement, the governor-elect was asked if he would support gun control measures in reaction to the Newtown massacre. Pence said he will continue to defend gun rights. “This is not about access to guns,” he said. “It’s about access to schools and I think we need to stay focused on making sure that our kids in school are secure.”
Carter, who was a state trooper for 18 years before serving two terms as sheriff, said he will need to study the issues before he takes a position on new gun control measures.
Pence also name Rob Carter to continue on as Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources and he named City County Council member Jeff Cardwell to lead the Office of Faith-based Initiatives. Cardwell will resign his council seat in January.
