Northbound U.S. 31 “Split Diamond” Interchange Segments Opening
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will begin tomorrow final work on 151st Street east of U.S. 31 that will culminate in the opening of new northbound “split diamond” interchange ramp segments.
Rieth-Riley Construction plans to mill and pave 151st Street east of U.S. 31 beginning Wednesday morning and continuing through Thursday. The operation is scheduled to take place during daylight hours, and flaggers will be used to direct traffic. Motorists are advised to plan for delays or take an alternate route if possible.
Pavement markings will follow the paving, and traffic on Greyhound Pass and 151st Street is planned to shift early next week to a configuration allowing the northbound ramp connector between Greyhound Pass and 151st Street to open to traffic.
Contractors plan to shift northbound U.S. 31 traffic to new pavement on the east side of the highway just south of 161st Street as early as next week. Also expected before Thanksgiving, the northbound U.S. 31 exit ramp to 146th Street will split to open access to Greyhound Pass and 151st Street. Access will remain open to northbound U.S. 31 from Greyhound Pass east of U.S. 31. Construction is expected to continue through the winter on the northbound U.S. 31 entrance ramp from 151st Street.
Upgrading U.S. 31 to freeway standards from I-465 to State Road 38 is the largest and most aggressive road project ever implemented in Hamilton County. The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County is part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend—reducing congestion, improving safety and providing continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
