SNOW/ICE UPDATE : Thursday eveningDecember 5th, 2013 at 7:35 pm by Robb Ellis under Weather
Have you seen snow, sleet, freezing rain or all of the above? After an initial round of wintry mix, snow and sleet, a larger area of precipitation is approaching. The snow/ice line is also drifting east and as precipitation increases, the changeover to snow will continue and accelerate.
Many locations, especially south of Indy have received accumulating ice of 1/8 to 1/4″. Sleet has also accumulated in some spots from Bloomington to Martinsville and Shelbyville. Once the changeover to snow occurs tonight, it is expected to remain snow, with the exception of extreme southern Indiana.
Accumulations still look on track for 2 to 4″ of snow for the Indianapolis Metro area tonight. Slightly higher amounts may be possible farther south, but the changeover to rain will keep totals from being higher.
The second wave of snow is still expected for Friday, and could bring an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow.
Storm total snowfall could be 5 to 9 inches for Indianapolis metro area, with a very pronounced increase in snowfall to the south. While there may be some spots that reach over 10″ of snow, they should be localized.
Saturday brings a break before another wintry system arrives late Sunday. That system looks to bring more snow or ice, but will not come with as much moisture.
