House Speaker’s plan changes the Pence proposal to phase out a taxJanuary 8th, 2014 at 11:46 am by Jim Shella under Jim Shella's Political Blog
Governor Mike Pence’s plan to phase out the business personal property tax is not included in the agenda announced today by his fellow Republicans in the Indiana House.
Speaker Brian Bosma spelled out a plan that calls for giving counties a local option to lift the personal property tax but only on new equipment, not on existing equipment as the governor proposed.
Its a plan that falls well short of the governor’s call to do away with the billion dollar tax.
“We think this is the smart route,” said Speaker Bosma, “and will give local counties the option to do what they know the community needs.”
“He has essentially given up on the governor’s proposal to eliminate the business personal property exemption,” said House Minority Leader Scott Pelath. “I think that that is a good move.”
The marriage amendment that would create a constitutional ban on gay marriage is not in the House GOP agenda.
The Speaker will address plans for dealing with it on Thursday.
