House Speaker Brian Bosma used his power Tuesday to keep the marriage amendment alive in the General Assembly.

The amendment that could lead to a permanent ban on gay marriage was headed for defeat in the House Judiciary committee. So the Speaker removed it from that committee and assigned to a new one.

Brian Bosma revealed his decision in what sounded like a routine announcement on the House floor.

It means the pressure is off three Republicans who were prepared to vote against it in the original committee.. where a vote was put on hold following a public hearing a week ago.

Bosma had three choices”  let it die, remove committee members, or reassign the bill.

It will now go to Elections committee because, the Speaker said, it calls for a referendum.

When asked if he is confident it will pass that committee, Bosma said, “You know, I’m not confident about anything around this place.  If somebody tells you they’re confident about something, they haven’t seen the intense lobbying that’s gone on on this issue in both directions.”

“I think this was a much better resolution than trying to remove someone from the committee or remove a couple people from the committee,” said Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington,) one of the committee members who was in a position to be removed if the Speaker decided against reassigning the bill.

Democrats called the Speaker’s move inappropriate.

The new committee will conduct a public hearing Wednesday and a vote is expected to take place immediately afterward.
