Mid-Morning Winter Storm Forecast Update

Here is the latest on the winter storm…

LOW TO MEDIUM CONFIDENCE IN THE FORECAST:  Frankly, last few model runs have been all over the place on this system on location, amount, and precipitation type, so I will keep things the same for now, but the numbers and locations could vary. The bottom line is that there will be a winter storm across central Indiana.  The rest below is the same as my thinking earlier this morning.  I added an impacts section at the bottom.

TOTALS:  The only change we have made in the past 12 hours is to trim some of the northern totals.  Colder, drier arctic air will slice into this system tomorrow and provide a sharp cut-off to the higher totals.  Trying to figure out where that will occur will be difficult.  Right now we will say that will happen north of Lafayette, Kokomo, and Marion.  We will still keep the 6″-10″ belt along and north of I-70, then 4″-8″ snow in southern parts of our area, but some accumulation of sleet and ice from freezing rain.

Snowfall

TIMING:

THIS EVENING: Scattered moisture during the day today will be nothing of consequence.  Around 7 this evening, more moisture will arrive and the wintry mix will begin depending on location.  Along and north of I-70, it should be more snow, south of I-70, freezing rain, sleet and rain.

OVERNIGHT:  As more moisture arrives, snow will get heavier, and wintry mix will get heavier depending on location.  We could see several inches of snow by Sunday morning north, and some coating of ice south.

SUNDAY:  Colder air will start to arrive during the day. This will change things to snow in southern parts of our area, and it will start to dry out some of the snow in far northern parts of our area.  Snow should be steady in the metro area.

SUNDAY NIGHT / MONDAY MORNING:  Snow should move out by late Sunday night, and things should be dry by Monday morning.

IMPACTS:  There could be power line problems in southern Indiana due to ice and wet snow on top of it.  Schools may have delays or cancellations Monday.  Check on any event Sunday before heading out.
