Ed Committee Chairman Bob Behning launches attack adsApril 30th, 2014 at 4:01 pm by Jim Shella under Jim Shella's Political Blog
We are now six days from the May Primary and the first attack ads are on the air. They come from an unlikely source.
Bob Behning represents a district that covers parts of Indianapolis and Hendricks County. He has been in the Indiana House of Representatives for 22 years and is facing the same primary opponent he defeated two years ago.
But this time Behning feels vulnerable and his TV ads show it.
Michael Scott is a union electrician and a Republican who is running against Behning.
On his website he talks about being a Christian and a politician. “God really calls us (as) a people to be a people that if we see something being done that’s wrong,” he says in a video, “to take a stance.”
But in an ad from the campaign of Bob Behning, Scott is made out to be a bad guy.
“Michael Scott’s negative campaigns have been funded by some the same groups that supported Barack Obama,” says the announcer, “organized labor and Democrats.”
“My TV ad is totally factual,” says Behning in defense of the ad. He points to negative mail pieces that have been distributed by outside groups trying to defeat him.
Scott sees it differently saying, “It’s out of desperation and the phone calls I’ve been receiving, people are just flat mad at Bob.”
And that’s what Behning worries about. He’s the chairman of the House Education committee and believes his support for education reform has made him a target.
“Across the state there’s a lot of people,” he said, “Tony Bennett was their number one target and I’m number two and so there’s a number of groups that would love to take me down.”
Never mind that Behning won 63% of the vote against Scott in 2012.
The ads tell you this race will be a close one.
