I-70 & East Street Restrictions for Bridge Work
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to remove half of the beams from the existing East Street bridge over Interstate 70 next week.
Beaty Construction, the INDOT contractor for the project, is permitted to close the East Street bridge each night next week from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to safely remove the beams using two cranes. Weather permitting, beam removal will begin Monday night. Restrictions should also be expected near the south split on eastbound I-70 and both the northbound and southbound I-65 ramps to westbound I-70 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
East Street will be closed between Prospect Street and the East Street exit ramp from I-65/I-70. A signed detour will direct East Street motorists around the closure.
Northbound: Morris Street to Shelby Street to Virginia Avenue to East Street
Southbound: Virginia Avenue to Prospect Street to East Street
Before the end of this year, INDOT intends to raise the East Street bridge by about twelve inches to achieve a minimum clearance of at least 15 feet, 1 inch. Last year, INDOT was able to increase clearances of seven bridges near the south split to at least 15 feet. An accelerated project closed I-70 and I-65 between the north and south split for 44 days to reconstruct and lower one-half mile of pavement. The South Split project was necessary to reduce the potential for collisions from unpermitted and off-route trucks with oversize and unsecure loads. Repeated bridge strikes from these trucks posed a safety concern.
Even with the increased clearances at the South Split, INDOT reminds all drivers to follow safety requirements by properly securing and measuring all loads, obtaining permits for loads higher than 13 feet 6 inches and following designated routes for oversize vehicles.
Information about the project and video of bridge strikes are available at www.SouthSplit.in.gov. Motorists, businesses and residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up to receive email updates using the red GovDelivery envelope icon.
