Operation Indy Commute: I-69 Nearing Completion
New Southbound Auxiliary Lane Opening By End of Week
FISHERS – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) expect to finish the final improvements to Interstate 69 between I-465 and State Road 37 by the end of this week—weather permitting. New southbound auxiliary lanes connecting between interchange ramps at 116th, 96th and 82nd streets are anticipated to open to traffic this week as the interstate is restriped during the overnight hours.
Crews plan overnight painting of lane markings this week to shift traffic into its permanent configuration. Beginning tonight at 8 p.m., motorists should expect various lane restrictions on southbound I-69 between 116th Street and 96th Street. Multiple lanes may be restricted after 10 p.m. Tuesday night crews expect to work between 96th Street and 82nd Street, and Wednesday night work will be completed south of 82nd Street to I-465. This schedule is subject to rain delays.
Drivers are advised to be cautious and practice safe habits in highway work zones. While the new lanes are anticipated to open to traffic this week, contractors will still be working in the area finishing minor items. Always follow speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles and avoid all distractions—including cell phones.
Last year, Rieth-Riley Construction built a new southbound travel lane between 116th Street and I-465 to add capacity and improve traffic flow. The contractor also built northbound auxiliary lanes connecting interchange ramps at 82nd, 96th and 116th streets. The auxiliary lanes are intended to improve traffic flow and strategically alleviate recurring commuting bottlenecks by allowing traffic traveling from one interchange ramp to the next to avoid unnecessarily merging with mainline interstate traffic.
A separate contract with Milestone Contractors built capacity and configuration improvements to the I-69 Exit 205 interchange at State Road 37 and 116th Street that are now open to traffic. Another Operation Indy Commute project is currently underway at the south side I-465 and I-65 interchange, and improvements are expected to be complete before the end of this year.
