Carmel’s approximately 60 snow plow vehicles will be working overnight again tonight and continue plowing until all City streets are clear. Crews began an All City plow at about 10:30 a.m. this morning. Crews have been plowing since Tuesday evening as the snow began accumulating. The City appreciates the patience of our community as the process of clearing all streets takes up to 24 hours for the 465 street miles and more than 800 cul-de-sacs in the City.
Due to the large volume of snow that fell overnight Tuesday and into the morning on Wednesday, crews had to continually plow main streets to keep them clear. After the snow stopped falling at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews went back and cleared and salted the main streets again and began re-plowing secondary streets as well as all neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs. If your street is not clear by 8 a.m. Thursday, January 29, please call the Carmel Street Department at 733-2001 to check on the status of the crews in your area.
The Street Department crews, with the help of Carmel Utility workers and equipment, will continue to monitor the roads throughout the city as we continue the All City plow through the night.

There’s a buzz in the newsroom that can only be generated from a presidential election night. Usually at this time of night most of the staff has gone home and those remaining are quietly working on putting together the evening newscasts. That’s certainly not the case on a night like this. Everyone’s been on their toes all day and as the results start to flow in from around the state and country, there’ll be no letting up for the next few hours.
Below are some behind the scenes pics from tonight’s broadcast courtesy WISH-TV Chief Photographer Steve Sweitzer.
Pam Elliot reports that Democrats are having a strong showing in Lake County. 17,965 votes have been counted, Obama has 73% of the vote while McCain has 26%.
24-Hour News 8’s Jay Hermacinski reports that Mitch Daniels may be planning a victory speech as early as 9:25 this evening.
The AP says Mitch Daniels has won his second term as governor of Indiana. But 24-Hour News 8’s Leslie Olsen is reporting that the Jill Long Thompson campaign has not yet conceded.
Earlier in the evening Leslie reported that supporters of JLT were hoping to catch her at the Marriott in downtown Indianapolis but Thompson instead chose to rest in her hotel room and prepare her speech.
Got a little down time before the results come in so I thought I’d toss out some info courtesy of the AP on one of the more interesting district races in Indiana.
–>District 9 Candidates — Democrat: Baron Hill (incumbent); Republican: Mike Sodrel; Libertarian: D. Eric Schansberg
Hill, who has represented the district for eight of the past 10
years, and Sodrel are facing each other for the fourth consecutive
election. Hill defeated Sodrel, the owner of a bus and trucking
company, in 2002, then lost to him in 2004. Hill won the seat back
two years ago.
24-Hour News 8’s Liza Danver will have a live report from Seymour this evening as we’ll be covering this race closely.
