Over the Limit Under Arrest

Law Enforcement Agencies Make More Than 800
Arrests During Statewide DUI Crackdown

Indianapolis, IN. – More than 250 state and local law enforcement agencies made a total of 809 DUI arrests during the 2009 Drunk Driving. Over The Limit. Under Arrest. Labor Day crackdown on impaired driving. This federally funded, high-visibility enforcement campaign focused specifically on detecting impaired drivers and motorcycle riders. During the two-week crackdown, participating law enforcement agencies dedicated more than 9,000 overtime hours towards removing impaired drivers and motorcyclists off Indiana roadways.

“I am confident that the efforts of our traffic safety partners succeeded in creating safer roadways for all Hoosiers this Labor Day,” said T. Neil Moore, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI). “They should be commended for the untold number of lives that were most likely saved as a result.”

In 2008, there were 246 alcohol-related fatalities that occurred on Indiana roadways. In an effort to decrease the number of alcohol-related fatalities on Indiana roadways this year, law enforcement agencies deployed key strategies to detect impaired motorists, such as high-visibility saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

While officers were primarily on the lookout for impaired drivers, other significant arrests were made during the crackdown, including: drug possession, illegal possession of handguns and outstanding warrants. Additionally, citations were issued for traffic violations such as failure to wear a seat belt, speeding, and failure to use proper child restraints.

“These crackdowns provide those of us in public safety with an opportunity to be more engaged with those we serve. The combination of traffic safety education, awareness and enforcement promotes safer communities and inspires positive behavioral changes behind the wheel needed to save more lives on Indiana roadways each year,” Moore added.

Following is an abbreviated listing of significant events that occurred throughout the state during the DUI crackdown:

County
Department
Significant Event

Hancock
Greenfield PD
Officer involved in a 15 mile pursuit of a possible drunk driver that resulted in the arrest of a nine year old child who had taken his parents vehicle.

Marshall
Marshall County Sheriff Department
Several arrests made on misdemeanor possession of marijuana, outstanding felony warrants, driving while suspended, reckless driving and felony possession of a methamphetamine lab.

Tippecanoe
Tippecanoe County Traffic Safety Partnership
Made a total of 22 OWI arrests with two of them being felonies.

Floyd
New Albany PD
Fugitive for sexual battery apprehended after traffic stop; several narcotics arrests made.

Lake
Lake County PD
Intoxicated driver stopped, subject had a prior suspension and should have had an interlock device on the vehicle; juvenile arrested on possession of 102 grams of marijuana.

Allen
Allen County Sheriff Department
Vehicle stopped on interstate going 110 m.p.h. Driver was intoxicated.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) serves as the state’s planning agency for criminal justice, juvenile justice, traffic safety, and victim services. The Institute develops long-range strategies for the effective administration of Indiana’s criminal and juvenile justice systems and administers federal and state funds to carry out these strategies.

Saturday AM closure near Marian University

September 15th, 2009 at 6:42 am by Julie Patterson under Traffic

Cold Spring Road will be closed at 30th Street during the morning of September 19 because of the Indiana Sports Corporation bicycle event. It is also the first home game for Marian University in their new stadium. Carpooling is strongly recommended for Saturday, for sure.

The campus are expects 3,000 people for the game, and I understand that the Corporate Challenge is expecting about 300 riders and around 50 volunteers, so we want to try and avoid traffic headaches if we can!

Special Traffic Advisory for this game

Parking and Ticket InformationGame day tickets are $5 per person.

On-campus parking will be available only to those with Marian University parking tags, e.g., students, faculty, and staff or special permits approved by Campus Police. Season tailgating passes are $40 for all four home games. Any car without a Marian University parking pass will be directed to park at the nearby Lake Sullivan Sports Complex. The parking fee is $5 per car. A shuttle service will bring people from the Lake Sullivan Sports Complex to campus and return them after the game.

: due to the Indiana Sports Corporation Corporate Challenge cycling event at the Velodrome, northbound traffic on Cold Spring Road will be restricted at 30th Street until noon. Campus visitors with university parking tags are advised to use 38th Street to access Cold Spring Road and enter campus at the north entrance near Allison Mansion. Visitors without parking tags should plan to park at the Lake Sullivan Sports Complex (Velodrome), where shuttles to and from campus are available. Velodrome parking is $5.

Indiana State Police to Enforce Temporary Worksite Speed Limits

During Construction on I-65 Near Seymour

Jackson County

– The Indiana State Police Seymour District will be tasked with enforcing temporary worksite speed limits, along with other traffic violations, at an INDOT project on I-65 in Jackson County. For approximately the next six weeks median cable barriers will be constructed on I-65 from the 54 mile marker to the 41 mile marker. The construction efforts will be broken down into sections only covering a few miles at a time in both directions. Motorists who come across these temporary worksites will see warning signs along with two sets of large 45 mile per hour speed limit signs with flashing lights.

The temporary worksites are scheduled to occur daily Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

The Indiana State Police advocate “voluntary” compliance with all laws including the temporary worksite speed limits, for the safety of workers and everyone else on the Interstate. For motorist caught violating the “Temporary Worksite Speed Limit” here are the penalties, court cost is on top of that.

First offense, a judgment of at least three hundred dollars ($300).

Second offense, in the previous three (3) years, a judgment of at least five hundred dollars ($500).

Third offense, in the previous three (3) years, a judgment of one thousand dollars ($1,000).

Lt. Mark R. Davis stated, “Our ultimate goal is the safety of the men and women working in the constructions zone. We do not look forward to writing tickets, but if the importance of driving safely through the construction zone is not your priority, you stand a good chance of seeing a $300.00 fine.”

When coming across slow moving or stopped traffic and your vehicle is the last one in line, activate your vehicle’s hazard lights to warn other drivers who may not be as observant.
