Mid-Morning Update

Temperatures have warmed up to about 30 here at the airport, but still in the upper 20’s in outlying areas. Models still show some slightly cooler air dropping down into the state this afternoon, so I will limit high temperatures when I combine the cooler air with some cloud cover that will mix in from time to time.

Decent, but Cool End to the Weekend

TODAY: An area of high pressure sitting to our NW will continue to pump cooler air into the state. The winds will be lighter than yesterday, but highs should still hit the mid to upper 30’s depending on location.

PRESIDENT’S DAY: Not too much change in the pattern. The ridge of high pressure will slide closer to us, and milder air will start to return to the state. Highs should hit the upper 30’s to around 40.

TUESDAY: Back to mild. Warm southerly winds will return and send highs in the upper 40’s to near 50. Rain could arrive by late Tuesday night.

Mid-Morning Update

Moisture has moved out of the viewing area. Our weather watcher in Hartford City reported 1″ of snow. Many places had little or no accumulation.

Temperatures will be cooler this afternoon. Highs should only climb a bit more into the mid to upper 30’s, with a chilly wind.

Improving Weather Today

TODAY: Watch for some slick roads this morning, especially north of Indianapolis, as some sleet has been mixing with snow. Snow accumulations should be 1″ or less north of Indy. Most of the precipitation should be out of the state by mid-morning. Temperatures should rebound into the upper 30’s.

THIS EVENING: If you are heading out this evening, the weather should be quiet, but cool. Winds will settle down a bit to around 10 miles per hour.

SUNDAY: Cooler air will settle into the state, but overall, not a bad day. Highs should hit the mid 30’s under a partly cloudy sky.

Flooding Concerns for Western Indiana

I wanted to point out a trend that has developed over the past several hours. Batches of rain, and what we call deep moisture convergence are stalling from the metro area, westward. The deep moisture if it remains in places for even a few more hours can help re-generate pockets of moderate to heavy rain for a prolonged periods of time.

With that in mind, many places west of Indy are approaching or topping 2″ of rain, so another 1″ – 2″ is not out of the question. Something we will monitor for you, but if you live west of Indy, the flooding situation will continue to deteriorate over the next several hours.

If you live in flood prone areas from the metro area – and places west, please closely monitor developments as water could rise very rapidly. Again, here is the map of the latest Flood Warnings.

RADAR: Nothing severe at the moment, but a line of heavy rain, and perhaps some gusty winds are moving through the metro area.

RAINFALL: Rain totals are piling up from the metro area, and places west, hence the Flood Warning until 7:15pm tonight.

WIND: Wind speeds are gradually picking up, but there may be a bit of a lull once this line moves through, then resume again this afternoon.

Heavy rain in excessf 1″-2″ have fallen from Indy and areas west, so the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning until 7:15 for many counties in the metro area.

Severe Weather Threat Assessment

Lets take a look at Forecast 8 VIPIR for a second.

A line of rain and a few storms are entering the western parts of the state. There are very few lightning strikes with this line. 2 things to look for are some straight-line winds or even a brief spin-up of a weak tornado. I stress none of those have been found yet, but we will monitor the line closely.

FLOOD ADVISORY EXPANDED: Marion County and several more metro area counties have been added to the Flood Advisory, which is in effect until 9:30. On the map below, the Flood Advisory are the counties highlighted in green.

LATEST ON RAINFALL: The heaviest pockets of rain at this hour are North and West of Indianapolis (where most of the Flood Advisories are in place. Here are the official totals and totals from our WeatherBug sites.

WINDS: Winds continue to increase gradually, and will do so for most of the morning. There may be some breaks later today before winds will pick up again this afternoon.

SEVERE WEATHER: So far, no severe weather, but there still is a slight risk as we go through the morning into the afternoon.

NEW FLOOD ADVISORY: A Flood Advisory has been issued for counties west of Indianapolis, where rain totals are already over an inch. Here are some rainfall totals so far.

LATEST ON WINDS: Winds are creeping up here in the state. We are not near the Wind Warning criteria yet, but we will see winds continue to pick up later today.
