Mike Delph

Immigration Watch

Look for a study committee on immigration reform to be named this week at the Statehouse and look for someone other than Sen. Mike Delph to take a lead role.

Meantime, opponents of the controversial Delph proposal (to punish employers) from last year continue to work to preserve their position.  I attended a get together Saturday for the Venezuelan Association of Indiana and Rep. Mike Murphy and Rep. Vanessa Summers were honored guests seated at a VIP table.  They led the fight against the Delph proposal.

Rep. Murphy, meantime, easily won a challenge for re-election where immigration played a big role.

Sine Die

Big Winner–Governor Mitch Daniels.. his property tax plan.. say no more.

Big Loser–Sen. Mike Delph.  His immigration plan is dead and its his fault.

Delph Disciplined

March 11th, 2008 at 3:48 pm by Jim Shella under Jim Shella's Political Blog

State Senator and Army Reserve Captain Mike Delph has been disciplined for his role in a February news conference related to the immigration bill where Colonel Ray Mejia appeared in uniform in violation of Army regulations.

What that discipline amounts to, the Army won’t say.  This is a message from Captain Adam Jackson:

“The Department of the Army… prohibits us from releasing information in personnel and medical files, as well as similar personal information in other files, that, if disclosed to the requester would result in a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.”

Delph gets his Day

Sen. Mike Delph’s immigration bill will get the hearing he’s sought in the Indiana House on Wednesday.

Delph also expects to hear this week whether he (as an Army Reserve Captain) or Lt. Colonel Ray Mejia will be disciplined for the news conference last week where Mejia appeared in uniform.

My guess is that Sen. Delph would the air cleared before the House hearing.

Sunday Summit

January 25th, 2008 at 4:53 pm by Jim Shella under Jim Shella's Political Blog

State Senator Mike Delph just sent me a link to a newspaper article from Fort Wayne explaining how the Allen County Sheriff wants to conduct his own crackdown on illegal immigration.

Ken Fries wants some of his officers (between 10 and 20) to be trained by the federal government on how to conduct immigration raids.  Its been done in other states.

Sen. Delph sees the story as an argument for the immigration bill he sponsored.

But, couldn’t it be cited as an example of how no new law is necessary?

Delph will get to make his case when he meets with Hispanics concerned about his bill on Sunday in the Statehouse.  The media is invited to attend.
