Barack Obama takes the issue of abortion head on in his commencement speech at Notre Dame. He says, “We must find a way to live together as one human family,” and says,”We must work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions by reducing the number of unintended pregnancies and making adoption more available.”
The President also defends his position on embryonic stem cell research.
Most of the anti-abortion protesters are gone.

President Barack Obama thanks Notre Dame for the honorary degree saying, “I’m 1 for 2.” It’s a reference to the degree denied him by Arizona State University. Father Theodore Hesburgh, the President says, is 150 for 150.
A protestor interrupts the President’s remarks and he says, “That’s all right… We’re not gonna shy away from things that are uncomfortable sometimes.”

Barack Obama just received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from Notre Dame. There was no disruption in the ceremony.
Also receiving honorary degrees today are former Purdue President Stephen Beering, NCAA President Myles Brand (in abstensia), and State Supreme Court Justice Randall Shepard.

Leaders in the crowd protesting Barack Obama’s commencement speech at Notre Dame talked about turning their backs to the motorcade when they got word that the President’s motorcade would enter the campus by a different route.

About a half dozen abortion protestors are in custody after trespassing at Notre Dame. Randall Terry (anti-abortion activist) and sometime politician Alan Keyes are here organizing the demonstration. They are not among those arrested. Keyes was bailed out last night after a second arrest here this week.
Meantime, pro-choice demonstrators use a bullhorn to send their message: “Abortion is not murder, fetuses are not babies, women are not incubators!”
Among the signs on the street are some that say “Congratulations, Class of 2009!” and “Relax and enjoy, graduates!” Air Force one is now on approach to the South Bend Airport, visible from the Notre Dame campus.

Hundreds, but not thousands, of anti-abortion demonstrators are in place across from the entrance to Notre Dame protesting the appearance of Barack Obama that is still 90 minutes or so away.
The have signs, brochures, and vehicles with billboards on the side roam through the neighborhood. One protester is making a video of the experience. Other recite Hail Marys. Neighbors watch from their porches and the media is everywhere.
