6:00 am Update

February 21st, 2009 at 6:14 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

Wintry Mix continues along the warm front.  Areas like Kokomo and Muncie are seeing pockets of snow, while most of the metro area is seeing a mix of some rain, sleet, and snow.  Temperatures are climbing at this hour.

5:00 am Update

February 21st, 2009 at 5:11 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

Still have the wintry mix moving in.  The mix and rain part tends to shift a bit to the south, but this first of 2 waves may feature more mix than snow, with wave 2 later today producing perhaps more snow than anything else.  Still expect the snowfall totals to fall in the 1″-3″ category for most places north of I-70, with up to 1″ south of I-70, with more wintry mix.

Wintry Mix Moving In

February 21st, 2009 at 4:20 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

A little spike of warm air is making its way into the western part of the state.  Temperatures are in the mid 30’s in Terre Haute.  Right now we are seeing a mix of rain and snow, and perhaps some sleet from I-74 south.  This will pick up in intensity over the next several hours, so roads will become slick.  More updates throughout the morning and live coverage on Daybreak at 6:00am.

One More Mild Day…

February 18th, 2009 at 5:29 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

TODAY: A storm system is slowly working through the Midwest, and will spit out some pockets of rain and maybe even a rumble of thunder from time to time.  Temperatures will stay mild for one last day, with highs in the mid 40’s.  Keep the umbrella handy, but we won’t see an all-day rain or storm event.

TONIGHT: The front will pass through and bitter cold air will arrive overnight.  Leftover moisture will convert to snow showers and flurries.  Any accumulation should be under 1″.  Temperatures will drop into the teens for lows.

THURSDAY: Colder air and flurries will set up shop, and highs will struggle to hit the low to mid 20’s.

Milder Weather Ahead Today

February 17th, 2009 at 5:23 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

TODAY: Warmer southerly winds will arrive into the state today, thanks to a storm system moving our direction out of the Plains states.  This should highs back to above normal values.  Rain should hold off until tonight, so both commutes should be dry.

TONIGHT: Scattered showers will move in with a warm front tonight.  Air should stay warm enough to keep it as rain…northern Indiana could see a brief wintry mix before changing to rain.

WEDNESDAY: We may not see all day rain, but scattered rain, and maybe even a thunderstorm or 2 could occur at any time.  Expect one more mild day with highs in the mid 40’s.

THURSDAY: Enter the Arctic Blast!  A big shot of colder air arrives and we will see some snow showers off and on.  Highs will only hit the low 20’s in most places!

Warm Weather Today…Strong Storms Wednesday?

February 10th, 2009 at 5:13 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

TODAY: After some rain overnight, warmer weather will continue to surge into the state.  Highs today should hit the mid 60’s, which is still about 10 degrees below the record high for today.  We can’t rule out a spotty shower or 2 again later today, with the highest chances down in southern Indiana.

TONIGHT: The next storm system will arrive overnight.  Expect rain to develop all across the area as well as some thunderstorms.  Rain could be heavy at times, and wind could be around the 25-30 mph range.

WEDNESDAY…SEVERE STORMS? The Storm Prediction Center has put most of the state under a slight riskof severe storms.  Keep an eye on morning cloud cover.  If we see some sunshine at all, we will have a better chance of severe storms.  Even if it stays cloudy, expect winds to still howl in the 50 mph range.  A High Wind Watch has been issued for almost the entire viewing area. Stay tuned to WISH-TV, MyIndy-TV, LWS and here for the latest.

THURSDAY: The weather system will slide to the east.  A shot of colder air will arrive, and we could see a few flurries or snow showers Thursday morning, before highs rebound back to lower 40’s.

Mild Start to Sunday…Cooler This Afternoon

February 1st, 2009 at 6:54 am by Ken Brewer under Weather

TODAY: Overnight temperatures were in the upper 30’s to lower 40’s.  The numbers have cooled off a bit, but mild air will still remain for most of the morning.  Slightly cooler air will drop temperatures back into state later today.  As the cold front slides through, we may see a sprinkle or 2, but I think most places should stay dry.

MONDAY: An upper-level storm system will develop on top of us .  This will usher in another round of arctic air.  What is a little more uncertain is what will happen in the snow department.  As the system gets stronger, more snow will develop.  It still looks like most of the snow will take place in the mid-Atlantic states, but we could squeeze out some minor accumulations here.  Stay tuned.

TUESDAY: Snow showers will continue, and the core of the brief arctic blast will arrive.  Again accumulation is uncertain.

Snow Day at IU

January 28th, 2009 at 2:34 pm by Jennifer McGilvray under Breaking News

Indiana University cancelled class for the first time since 1978 and students on campus made sure to make the most of this rare moment.  As an IU grad, we never even had a half day of classes cancelled, but it would have been nice.

My photographer John LeSage and I drove around on campus to see what the kids were up to.  Many decided to bundle up and try sledding down the hills near the dorms or on Dunn Meadow.  Others weren’t very bundled up and tried it anyways.  We even saw one student walking around in shorts.

Some students tried to shovel their cars out of the mounds of snow buried from the passing snow plows.  John says students should at least shovel out the snow today before it turns to ice tomorrow.

The drive to Bloomington was fairly easy.  INDOT had a least one lane clear for the entire trip on State Road 37.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University’s Bloomington campus will be closed all day Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, due to heavy snow, which has created unsafe travel conditions. It is expected that normal operations will resume Thursday. However students, faculty and staff should watch http://indianauniversity.info/ for updated advisories.
