Dry Slot Moving In

We have reports of some Icy roads in northern and northeastern parts of the viewing area, where some of the freezing rain mixed in a few hours ago.

Most of the activity has shut down, as a dry slot is moving through the state. We could seem some sprinkles or light freezing drizzle over the next 3-4 hours. After that, the low pressure center will swing through, and some flurries or light snow will re-develop later this afernoon and evening. I still think most of the area will see 1″ or less snow accum.

THIS MORNING: Warmer air has surged a bit farther north, so rain has moved a bit farther north as well. The Winter Weather Advisory has been lifted for Indianapolis and areas west. The chance of a wintry mix has moved north.

REST OF TODAY: Colder air will fill back in, and some light snow will fill back in as well. I think most places will see little if any accumulation. Northern and northeastern parts of the viewing area could see several inches in spots.

SUNDAY: Calmer, cooler weather will return. Highs will hit the upper 20’s to around 30.

Roads Icing Up

“Brown County…numerous cars off on 45 and Bloomington” – Kathy M.

“Just took 2.5 hrs to get from Crawfordsville road off of 465 to home in Clayton. ALL road ever hwy 40 & 36 solid ice. Cars & trucks off roads everywhere, saw a bassett truck do a 360 in front of me! ALL roas solid ice between Avon & Greencastle. Hwy 231 in Greencastle closed. Cannot get a salt truck up water works hill.”- T. Lewis

There is freezing drizzle in Avon right now. Temperature is 28 degrees. The roads are a sheet of ice right now. Our neighbor just said it took her an hour to get home from Brownsburg!” – Meghann S.

Roads will be icy for at least 4-6 hours….

Sleet and Freezing Rain Now Falling

Some Wintry Precipitation Begins

There have been spotty reports of some of the light snow and freezing rain reaching the ground. The lower levels of the atmosphere continue to see moisture increase, so it should be a matter of a few hours before more organized precipitation begins. As temperatures increase, we will see more of a changeover to freezing rain later this afternoon.

Winter Weather Arrives This Afternoon

A Freezing Rain Adivisory is in effect for most of the metro area, and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for northen parts of the viewing area. The bottom line, expect some form of winter weather later this afternoon.

TODAY: Storm system from the Plains is still developing. The atmosphere is adding moisture from the upper-levels down to the lower levels. This will take some time to develop, so while radar may indicate snow, most won’t reach the ground this morning becasue the lower levels are bone-dry. Expect sleet – freezing rain to begin by mid-afternoon, then as low-level air warms up, should change to rain by late evening.

ICE ACCUMULATION? There is a chance that the sleet and freezing rain will accumulate. Most places will have totals around .1″, but there could be some spots up to .25″ ice accumulation.

TONIGHT: By midnight, all of the viewing area should see rain, and ground temperatures should get above freezing.

CHRISTMAS EVE: Temperatures will continue to climb into the low to mid 40’s in the morning, then after a cold front passes, temperatures will slowly fall, and we could see a few flurries late in the day.

CHRISTMAS DAY: Cooler air will move in, but it should be a quiet day. Highs should hit the mid to upper 30’s.

Wind Chill Advisory Until Monday Morning

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for the rest of today, and tonight, as winds will stay gusty, and air temperatures will hover in the single digits, or possibly below zero in northern parts of the viewing area. Avoid any prolonged exposure to the cold today.

New Snowfall Potential Map

Indications are that we may be in the lighter slot of snow totals with the heavier totals in northern Indiana. Keep in mind these may change, but here are the latest estimates for our area.

Still Waiting for Snow

All locations in Indiana are dry at this hour, however changes aren’t too far behind. Light snow is reaching the ground in central Illinois. The atmosphere is starting to moisten up from the top-down, so it should be a few hours, and we will see that here in central Indiana.
